| Scrambling Photos from Mount Romulus | June 12, 2010 |
Mount Romulus is a fun scramble in the Elbow Kananaskis area. The route we took up is well described in Alan Kanes guidebook. There is a shortcut route up the mountain but due to rockfall hazard from snow melt it was not the safest way up for us.
Finally after about 6 weeks of bad weather a sunny weekend came along and it was awesome. I met Ferenc at the trailhead at 5 and off we went on our bikes. Unfortunately, I hadn't cycled in about a year and my quads were quite strained from the approach on bikes. This slowed me down quite a bit. I'm not used to being waited for constantly by people. Usually it is the other way around. I managed to loose one of my socks after the first creek crossing. I put them in my pockets and wore my sandals the rest of the way to the river crossing. I noticed after the river crossing that one of them was missing. Ferenc was nice enough to lend me a liner sock for the ascent. It didn't seem to bother my foot all that much though not having a thick sock. I found it again by our bikes when we got down.
Ferenc took off back home after we got to the bikes. This spared me the embarrassment that happened soon after he left. When I tried to get on my bike I couldn't sit down on the seat because my ass hurt incredibly from the ride in on my hard bike seat. I have only done one bike approach before and apparently I either forgot about the ass pain or it wasn't so bad that time. I couldn't really peddle while standing either because my quads also hurt. I didn't want to walk the 11km back to the car so I thought up a solution. Your going to laugh at my expense at this if you haven't already. I decided to shove my fleece coat into my pants as padding so that I could ride back to the car. This worked very well as the pain was hardly noticeable with my coat underneath me. There were a lot of people on the trail and it seemed that no one noticed that I was carrying a lot of junk in my trunk. Maybe they just thought I had a huge oddly shaped ass. The next day I decided not to do a scramble with a bike approach.
Despite all the complications it was a lovely scramble with cool views. Apparently this area doesn't usually look so nice. Having a lot of snow around does help the views. I have a lot of great photos. Unfortunately they are not as great as they could have been since I had a smudge on my lens the whole weekend without my knowledge
