| Scrambling Photos from Little Snowdome | July 29, 2009 |
Little Snowdome is a very fun short scramble by the Icefield. I did this as an evening scramble before heading up Mount Coleman the next day. The only tough part was crossing the Sunwapta River to get to it. It can be easily crossed as it enters Sunwapta Lake where it fans out. The difficult part about crossing it is the freezing cold water, burr. It even had chunks of ice in it. After the crossing I headed up the moraine and through a short forest that involved some bushwhacking. After that the remained of the ascent was nice solid rock all the way to the summit. The summit cairn was pathetic so I built up a much better one. The view was awesome. Mount Athabasca and Mount Andromeda were by far the most interesting mountains to look at. Unfortunately, Snowdome and Mount Kitchener had pretty bad lighting, since they were in the shade mostly. This gives me a reason to come back to this cool mountain in the morning and get some nice light on Snowdome and Kitchener. On the way down, I got to take advantage of some nice snow gullies. Crossing the river on the way back wasn't so bad but it still got really cold. Definitely a superb scramble. Nothing technical about it so I would rate it as an easy scramble. It took me 3 hours round trip so I would say that it should take people from 3 to 6 hours to complete. If it weren't for the river crossing this would probably be a very popular scramble
