My 2 older brothers introduced me to backpacking in the mountains in high school. I enjoyed backpacking with them a couple times a year. In 2004 my oldest brother Karl introduced me to Scrambling and the Grant Macewan Mountain Club in Edmonton. My first scramble was Eiffel Peak. It was not exactly a beginner. At least not a beginner according to Alan Kane's book "Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies". But I found it awesome. Later that summer I signed up for Big Sister which almost killed me. On descent my legs were so full of jello I couldn't even walk without falling at times. Luckily this wasn't until we got to the trees. I then took a dip into the cool waters of Spray Lake and felt like a new person. Ever since I have been hooked and try to fit in a trip to the mountains whenever possible.
My biggest thrill that year came when I found out that the club was doing a beginner mountaineering course to Castleguard Mountain in the end of August. Since I was a kid I had always wanted to see the Columbia Icefields. This was the one trip I always wanted to do. So I signed up for a Mountaineering Course and got the experience needed to attend this trip. The weather that year was less than ideal overall and I was worried that my dream trip might be cancelled. But as if from divine intervention the clouds lifted that weekend. We were treated to clear blue skies and perfect conditions for an ascent of Castleguard. I took some of my best photos on that trip and one of the best panoramas from the summit of Castleguard. Since then I have had trouble coming up with a new dream trip to be completed. In the process of deciding a new dream trip I have instead come up with a long list of dream trips instead of one specific dream trip.
My first camera was a hand me down point and click from my brother. I used it for every trip until I joined the Mountain Club when it started to eat my film every second trip. This could not be tolerated. In 2006 I bought a brand new Canon A95 Powershot digital camera and my life was so much better. Not only did it not eat my film it also took pictures of vastly better quality. I was hooked on it. Especially once I figured out how to create panoramas. I started my website soon after at the request of a club member. It was nothing special at the time. Took me about 5 minutes to write and was very primitive. After enough people were interested I decided to make a better website which was the predecessor to this website. It impressed people for a couple of years. But I still wanted something more from my website. Something cool like automated slide shows and panoramas that scroll themselves. So I sat myself down and coded up a storm resulting in this much improved website.
Outside of the mountains I keep myself busy with my studies. In 2006 I completed a BSc with Specialization in Computing Science. Since then I have been trying to figure out what to do with myself. My current plan is to complete an Honors degree in Math and then apply for Graduate Studies in Computing Science at the University of Alberta. On December 27 2008 I married Allison Keefe who I met at the University of Alberta Dance Club. We have had many great times together and many more to come.
